On the fly

Lake Athens: June 22, 2012

went after bass but had little luck; perfect weather; no wind; partly cloudy; got on the water by 5:15 to get started right at daybreak.  An hour of casting my deerhair popper and seaducer netted two small 14-15 inch bass.  So, I put my 3 weight together; added a 5 foot sink tip to my […]

Weedless Spider

Sometimes when you’re brim fishing over moss you need a semi-weedless fly to “tick” the moss on the retrieve.  The bentback spider or weedless spider is oftentimes the ticket.

Take a aberdeen hook and bend it slightly.  Too much bend will make the fly twist.

add some sparkle yarn or chenile

right at the bend add legs; you […]

Lake Athens: June 6, 2012

Caught a nice bass and some big coppernose this morning. Moderate wind, muggy weather; started at 5:40; off water by 10:00. Caught the lone bass on a deerhair popper; red and white; and the brim on a slow sinking black spider with white legs. Still can’t find the big red-ear brim.

leech yarn

mono thread

3.  take fluff from the feather to make tail; tail as long as hook shank.

Yellow Bass from Caddo Lake

Caddo Lake is the largest natural lake in Texas. Located on the Texas/Louisiana border it is one of the finest fishing lakes in Texas. You can almost always find something biting on Caddo. I am fortunate to have Henry Carter as my long-time friend and fishing partner. Henry was born and raised in Uncertain and […]

Lake Athens Brim and Bass

Lake Athens, located about 10 miles from my home, is my favorite lake for brim and bass fishing. It has a good population of large bluegill, including the copper-nose. There are some large red-ear, or “government brim,” also. Black bass are abundant and because of its close proximity to the Texas Freshwater Fish museum and […]

Lake Athens: May 27, 2012

My son, Trevor and I left the boatdock a little before 6 AM, hoping the topwater bite would be on at a couple of our favorite spots on the lake.  The weather was just about perfect, partly cloudy, a cool 74 degrees, light southerly wind of about 4 mph.  Everything was good except the bass […]
