Lake Athens, located about 10 miles from my home, is my favorite lake for brim and bass fishing. It has a good population of large bluegill, including the copper-nose. There are some large red-ear, or “government brim,” also. Black bass are abundant and because of its close proximity to the Texas Freshwater Fish museum and hatchery, the game fish officials keep it well stocked. My personal best largemouth was a 10 lb 10 oz. fish taken in 1984. It very possible to catch a 4,5 or 6 pounder on any given outing and 14 to 16 inch fish are very numerous.
